What We Do – Our Current ‘Services’

The Telephone Contact Line

Parent Support Link aims to provide a 24-hour service to callers seeking either Information about illegal substances and their effects, or as a listening ear to people who find themselves affected by another persons drug use.

The aim of Parent Support Link  is, through volunteer workers, to provide a round the clock service, where a person will respond to callers. However if the answering service is used e.g. if the telephone line is busy, then it is expected that the call will be responded to within 6 hours.

Listening Session

These are offered to callers who identify as requiring more support than is appropriate on the telephone contact line. There are many circumstances where this is the case, and the volunteer workers are trained to recognise and read this type of call. This service is delivered at our office base. The sessions are offered through an appointment system, and we aim to offer these appointments on a next day basis.

1-2-1 sessions are offered to explore ways of coping and work towards a plan to change the way things are.  This is arranged by appointment only. During this time an assessment is made jointly with the people concerned.   The sessions are limited and we offer a course of up to six sessions.

Support Groups

Parent Support Link offer various support groups throughout Hampshire for those affected by someone else’s drug use (parents, partners, husbands, wives, friends, brothers, sisters, grandparents).

An evening support group in Southampton on the first Tuesday of the month from  7.30 – 9pm offering a safe place to talk through how you are feeling and to share concerns and experiences with others who are coping with drug and alcohol use in the family.  This is a facilitated group meeting

On the 2nd  and 3rd Monday of the month at 10-12  there is a support group (drop-in) to share concerns and experiences with others who are coping with drug and alcohol use.  This is a facilitated group meeting.  Please call PSL for further information.

We are also affiliated with other support groups in the Hampshire area and a list of these is available on our Download page.

Information Giving

This is a community based activity, and is provided in areas where the general public can access the service i.e. shopping malls, health fairs, conferences, training events etc. The stall that we provide is run by volunteer workers and provides factual information either in verbal or leaflet form and a chance for people to see what illegal substances, and some of the paraphernalia looks like.

The aim of the ‘information giving’ work is not to approach the public or canvas support, it is a passive exercise aimed purely at offering information in the most accessible way as possible. We can also invite people to our office to gather information or use the resources i.e. leaflets, books or dvds/videos.
